The Festival of Democracy

Ramar Jokik

Polling parties for 43 polling stations of 16 Yachuli were dispatched on 7th and polling parties for 29 polling stations of 17 Ziro Hapoli were dispatched today.  For onlookers the premises of Abotani Hall and the Subansiri Stadium wore a festive look with over 100 vehicles, a huge crowd and loudspeakers blaring out names and numbers from 7am in the morning.  As For the polling parties there were apprehensions, enthusiasm, gusto and joy in the air around them. Huddled in small groups with their team members for me everyone is hero today. Many of them will march on foot for hours and many will have to travel for more than 90 kms to reach their polling stations. Many will have to be valorous and gallant to tackle situations in critical and hypersensitive polling stations. With a prayer parties for Sito, Nama and Harak the  furthest in 16 Yachuli were the first to be dispatched on 7th morning.

These polling parties specially the presiding officers and the polling officers have been rigorously trained in different phases to acquaint them with all the polling procedures. They have been given hands on training on EVMs. But yes we are humans…the master trainers for the polling procedures were bombarded with  number of calls last evening from all corners of 16 Yachuli assembly constituency with  number of queries. Bisht and Mishra the master trainers just looked at each other smiled and kept answering the queries.

Many are seasoned well with election duty for years but for many it’s their first official discharge. The teams have a mix of seasoned and first timers. Many new bonds and friendships will be developed during these 4-5 days exercise. As the whole state goes for voting tomorrow I pray for a smooth and successful poll, devoid of any violence and yes the safe return of all the polling parties. “AMEN” (The writer is a DIPRO, Ziro)

Poor people continue to be evicted

During the past decade an area of land two-and-a-half times the size of Pakistan or one-and-a-half times India's has been sold off globally, says a report from British charity, Oxfam. This land could feed a billion people, equivalent to the number of people who go to bed hungry each night, it says. In poor countries, foreign investors have been buying an area of land the size of London every six days.

Oxfam’s report, Our Land, Our Lives, warns that more than 60 per cent of investments in agricultural land by foreign investors between 2000 and 2010 were in developing countries with serious hunger problems. However, two thirds of those investors plan to export everything they produce on the land. Nearly 60 per cent of global land deals in the past decade have been to grow crops that can be used for bio-fuels.

The report says that as the world’s leading standard-setter and a big investor itself, the World Bank should freeze its own land investments and review its policy and practice to prevent ‘land-grabbing’. In the past the Bank has chosen to freeze lending when poor standards have caused dispossession and suffering. It needs to do so again, in order to play a key role in stopping the global land rush," says the report, urging the World Bank to help set standards for investors and introduce more robust policies to stop land-grabs.

The report comes as Oxfam steps up its campaign to end land grabs that violate the rights of the world’s poorest people. Oxfam supports greater investment in agriculture and to small-scale farmers. However the unprecedented rush for land has not been adequately regulated or policed to prevent land grabs. This means that poor people continue to be evicted, often violently, without consultation or compensation. Many lose their homes and are left destitute, without access to the land they rely on for food to eat and make a living.
